I've always wanted one. Just realized this very minute that it is a NEED now. I am the very worst person with directions out in the wilderness. Ride the same area for years...and still don't know the trails.
Ready to buy now. Post links (even to ADV but make sure it's not a 200page thread, LOL) Give me info...

*Battery operated
*tough, durable
*back-track for when I get lost
*less Dual-Sport and more trail oriented?
*maps must be idiot proof (none of this download in this format, change to this upload that Bullshit!)
*motorcycle mountable

Top contenders??
1. Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX: - --OMFG over $500???
2. Montana
edit

3.Garmin GPSMAP 76Cx ---less than $300?hmmmmm
4.Garmin GPSMAP 62st-- about $355

I like the Garmin 650, I have the TOPO U.S. 24K - West Map loaded on it. It is easy to see while riding on or off road and the touch screen works with riding gloves so you dont have to take your gloves off everytime you want to check things out. I use the Garmin Amps Cradle with the Enduro Engineering Universal Computer/GPS Mount. It works preety good. Some of the guys I ride with use the Touratech Locking GPS mount. The Touratech mount locks and has vibration dampning built into the design. We did have one of the Montana's fail on us last summer, Hodakaguy has a thread on here for the fix. Here are a couple of links. Hope this helps.

yeah, I put the Montana in there because I remember reading about it in his report

I think for the riding I do, the 60 would be fine. If I could get a used one from someone trusted I think I would go that route. Buying new there isn't that much of a price difference so.....

*saw a couple of good threads on ADV...still wanted to check in here

If anyone sees a BlackFriday deal for the Montana (or either for that matter) let me know. I may not be able to wait and order something up this weekend since I probably won't be able to find a used something.

I just entered the GPS world (well almost) - bought a returned 60csx at REI's garage sale for $145. OBTW I saw RelayTech there! The unit worked but the leaking batteries had eaten a hole in the plastic. James at Renazco Racing came through with the part I needed after advertising on ADVrider. He had a 60csx with a broken screen for parts. Not sure I really need it for riding but I also do cross-country hiking with my wife, and it should come in real handy then.

The big screen on the Montana sure looks nice but I didn't want to spend $600 only to find out we hardly use it.

I'm partial to my spare android phone loaded with MyTrails. I just use it strictly for riding, there is no plan on it. I like it better than reg GPS because you can have multiple maps loaded of the area.
