Since I have been out of off roading for awhile, I thought I would pick everyone's brains for what kind of stuff they carry in their fanny/back packs. For the true noobs that have never been off road, a list to send them to start out with might be really nice. I thought I could start it, then everyone could build and modify until we come to some kind of a master list. These are in no order of importance.

- spare spark plugs
- spare length of chain and master link
- zip ties
- duct tape
- baling wire
- tire repair kit
- bandaids
- maxipad (don't laugh, I have seen several peoples lives saved because of these!)
- medical gloves
- anti septic wipes
- hand sanitizer
- water
- toilet paper
- empty zip lock bags
- GPS device
- matches
- knife of some sort
- pliers
- spark plug wrench
- end wrenches (min 10, 12 & 15mm)
- phillips and slotted screw driver
- axle wrench appropriate for your bike

So it's just a start. We might even want to have 2 lists. One for short rides, and the other for longer ones.

Don't forget strapping a Snap-On rollaway cart to your back... j/k, it's actually not too much different from what I carry in my MSR Enduro pack.
- Fredette "Riders Wrench" for the front and rear axles and spark plug.
- Brake bleeder ratcheting wrench (8mm & 10mm) handles 95% of the fasteners.
- 13mm wrench for the rim locks.
- Combination screwdriver.
- Multi-tool (pilers, knife & screwdriver).
- Two allen wrenches (4mm & 6mm I think?)
- Two shorty tire irons.
- Tire patch kit.
- CO2 tire inflator.
- Three CO2 cartridges.
- Tire guage.
- Zip-ties.
- Duct tape.
- TP (for dropping a deuce, also doubles as a band-aid when used with duct tape).
- Copy of drivers license & registration.
- Spark plug.
- Masterlink.

After hundreds of races and rides I've never NOT had exactly what I need to make it back to the truck. Truth is, most of the time, I've used them on others bikes. I used to carry a cell phone until I killed two of them. Water is carried in my camelback.

I totally spaced on an allen wrench! And a Leatherman type multi tool would be much better than a pair of regular pliers.

Biggest thing you need to be able to do is repair a flat tire. Particularly if you ride in rocks. Everything else is used for temporary trail-side repairs. Also I don't carry high-end tools in case I loan one out, lose one or the whole pack.

Tow strap or piece of rope long and strong enough. I had to go to my truck and dig up a tow rope to pull a buddy out awhile back, left it in my pack and guess what happened to me 2 weeks later about 10 miles from the nearest road. Found a little mud puddle.

Okay, forget everything I said above. The best trail kit is a riding buddy who'll lug around all the tools to fix anything should you breakdown/get injured. It also helps if they're a little bit slower than you.

Ha ha, that's always been me..... A little bit slower than everyone else, but loaded with all the tools. I'll never claim to be the fastest, nor do I care to be. I'm out to enjoy the ride, not compete.

What I keep on me:

Small first aid kit

multi tool

mini 1/4" drive set (metric obviously)

axle wrench

water purifier+16 oz. jug

flint

tire patch kit+small tire irons

compass

flares

A few granola bars or something

9mm hand gun/ammo.

I think that's about it....
