Hello!

I've recently decided that I want a dualsport for adventures! I'm 100% envious of what you guys do around here. I've ridden quads for the last 22 years and have been involved in the racing community for the last 5 (although don't get much racing done myself). I don't get to ride them much because Washington isn't really quad friendly, and that's sort of led me to the dualsport side of motorcycles. My one and only time on a bike of any real size (we're talking two wheels here) was a friend's RM250 at the Oregon dunes. It was fun, but I've decided I'm too short to have much fun on a dirtybike without some major expenses to get it set up right. I've been eyeballing the Honda 230s and the Yamaha XT225, but I'm kind of a sucker for older 70s bikes too.

Anyway, I'll probably continue to lurk and gather info. I'm totally up in the air about what to do, but it's nice to know there is a community of local ds people!

Welcome, HI!

*I've also been thinking about an older enduro/type bike. Really want something that I can just completely take apart, clean, and put back together without having to more than replace seals, bolts, etc....

Ok, so I realize these bikes are comparable in a way and everyone has their brand preference...BUT

I just found a 08 XT250 for a good price. It's not as sporty and it looks kind of dopey compared to the 230M, but it also has a low seat height and looks like upgraded performance. So, should I spend the extra cash on the M which is a year newer and has 1/3 of the miles, or save $800 and buy the not-quite-as-cool Yamaha? I still need to sit on one to see if I can touch the ground.

you sure see alot of the xt's around here. I had a friend that had one and said it was a great bike, as long as you were not trying to out ride what it could handle. Great starter bike. I realy know nothing about the honda 230m. someone on the forum rides one, i think.

They seem kinda expensive.

The guy with the XT I was looking at wants $2300. It's only got 1300 miles on it. The Honda is stupid expensive for what it is, and the only reason I'm considering it is because a dealer's got a demo unit they want to get rid of and are offering a good price. After doing more research I answered my own question, kind of. Either bike I guess would be fine. I'm just partial to the Honda and so I'm probably going to continue to lean that direction.

There is a video on the XT vs the 230L (and if you listen closely the female test rider gets a little sideways in a trail and screams lurk ) and the bottom line for both bikes was positive, so I'm probably going to get the Honda unless the dealer is going to be a chooch. I don't need something that goes very fast or is super high performance, even though it doesn't stop me from WANTING something fast and high performance...

I've already started selling things to come up with extra cash cheers

That's the guy with the XT! lol. In the corner of one pic you can see the tailight of a Caddy he's selling too.

Actually, I've sat on a 250 with a Devol 1" lowering link on it...still much too tall for me to safely ride. I could scrape a toe to balance. I'm only 5'1. Do you think I could lower it any more than 1"? I really like the Kawasaki.

Too funny.

I'm sure it could be lowered more. The problem is it starts to get into stuff that is harder for the average person to do, (such as take an inch out of the seat).
All it takes is time, money, and research. 2Cents

*me...i'm a gotta have it, gotta have it now kind of guy. too impatient for all that. Duhhh

**edit....$269 for seat concepts.
**double edit.....says there is a 2" lowering link?

Yeah found a 2" link, but I work in a machine shop and can have one made...and I suppose I could take 2 inches out of the seat? HMMMM...I will call tomorrow and maybe go look at it. I can't imagine it will be around long at that price.

I have an XT-225. It is licenseable, will go 60 mph and is good for single track as long as you done't want togo real fast. I prefie it to the Honda because it has less weight and better torque. I think it would be a very good starter bike for you to get a few years of experience with. A riding friend of mine just bought a 2004 XT with 1200 miles for $2000. Look around.

DITTO!

That is a bad ass bike for sure!

Once and for all:

I don't have any oil advice for the SL350 because when I put WD-40 on my chain, the bike threw me off, and then drove off taking my Langlitz jacket with it. It then stopped off at the Washington DOL and stole a typewriter, and a computer with a shitty 2.2 gig processor and a measly 256 of RAM which was loaded with Windows 95 and Word Perfect, then the SL hacked the system and sent letters to all of the KTM owners in Washington demanding the plates back for their illegally street-registered 2 stroke dirt bikes, and finally sent an award to the State Trooper who had written the most tickets to innocent people for breaking well known traffic laws.

Therefore, I don't care what kind of oil a SL350 uses, because it is a dirty whore who doesn't deserve to be lubricated. Yes, I just said lubricated and dirty whore in the same sentence. Whaddya gonna do about it, call my mother??

I have switched gears... I am 95% sure I want a klx250 now! I can build a lowering link here at work, and then if need be, shave the seat. wink Pretty sure I'll have to shave the seat. :Slaphead:

If this is the most terrrrrrible idea a person can have, please intervene...

My boss bought a wr250x and rode it to work yesterday. I had enough leg to sit on it, but not enough leg to push it upright! It sort of ruled that bike out, unfortunately, because it didn't look like it could be lowered enough without monstrous expense. Sad

Thems is purty though! I might have gotten some drool on it...

The x lowers easily and pretty cheaply. Just as, if not easier than the klx250
